A perceptual model for eccentricity-dependent spatio-temporal flicker fusion and its applications to foveated graphics

Virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) displays strive to provide a resolution, framerate field of view that matches the perceptual capabilities human visual system, all while constrained by limited compute budgets transmission bandwidths wearable computing systems. Foveated graphics techniques have emerged could achieve these goals exploiting falloff spatial acuity in periphery field. However, considerably less attention has been given temporal aspects vision, which also vary across retina. This is part due limitations current eccentricity-dependent models system. We introduce new model, experimentally measuring computationally fitting critical flicker fusion thresholds jointly for both space time. In this way, our model unique enabling prediction information imperceptible certain frequency, eccentricity, range luminance levels. validate with an image quality user study, use it predict potential bandwidth savings 7X higher than those afforded spatial-only foveated models. As such, work forms foundation temporally techniques.
